I love Christina Dodd! She knows how to write to keep the reader on the edge of their seat! I love how she can make even the mundane events of everyday life thrilling!
I really got into this series. Christina Dodd knows how to write thrillers and the romantic element makes it even better. I have the whole set.
Love all her books
Christina Dodd has created a suspenseful, series that hooks you in the first chapter you read. You become attached to the characters struggles to do right and stay alive at the same time. She keeps you on the edge waiting to see what happens next. I am in the process of reading this series for the second time.
Christina Dodd has always been one of my favorite authors and she is now branching out into the paranormal venue with this new series. You should start with book 1 - Scent of Darkness before reading this one. Scent of Darkness (Darkness Chosen, Book 1)There will be 2 more books in the series and I'm looking forward to reading both. I won't go into the premise - does that well enough. But the Dodd style of writing is excellent as always - lots of romance, sex and action/adventure. There is also a well thought out plot, which isn't always evident in romance novels.
Honestly, this 2nd of 4 Darkness Chosen series of Dodd's is my least favorite of the entire series, but it is still a pretty good book. I highly recommend the entire series.
Archeologist Rurik Wilder is tall, strong, devilishly handsome and more formidable than he appears. Rurik can change into a powerful bird of prey, but this ability has brought about death and sorrow. Now Rurik has been given the chance to redeem himself and help his family break a centuries old pact with the devil.

Blocking his path to redemption is the beautiful Tasya Hunnicutt. Tasya is determined to expose the assassins that murdered her parents. In seeking revenge, Tasya risks not just her life but Rurik's as well. The assassins Tasya aims to defeat are said to have special powers. Powers that are evilly inhuman.

I have been all wiggly waiting for book two in the Darkness Chosen series, Touch of Darkness. Thankfully, I didn't have very long to wait. I have been drooling in anticipation of Rurik. And Rurik is sooo drool worthy. He is smart, gorgeous and bad to the bone. I couldn't ask for more!

Christina Dodd's Touch of Darkness is as sexy, exciting and romantic as the first book in this series, Scent of Darkness. The utter foulness of the adversaries and the struggle against them will put readers on the edge of their seats. The passionate romance between Rurik and Tasya will leave readers breathless. The longing for the third book in this series will fill readers with anxious anticipation.

Annmarie
Reviewed for Joyfully Reviewed
This is a fantastic book on the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Well written, well researched, and well documented. Read it. I is definitely worth your time. For maximum benefit, don't just read it, but take the time to open the scriptures as read the cross references in the text.

I would like to make a comment on the Kindle version of this book. The content of this book was certainly worth the price. However, I am appalled at the lack of attention to detail that this publisher put into formatting this e-book. This is a pervasive problem with this publisher. I have read many e-books by this publisher and they all have the same problem of bad formatting. When you pay as much for an e-book as you do for a paper book I think we should expect, or demand, that the publisher put in the up-front effort to get it right. This publisher seems to be either ignorant of what an e-book should be, apathetic toward e-book readers, or arrogant of their near monopoly in this genre. All it would take is a few hours time for a skilled e-book editor to format the book for the kindle. However, it seems that they turn this important task over to an unskilled editor and then put it up on Amazon expecting that the readers won't notice or won't care. We do notice, and we do care. Once again Deseret Book you disappoint me.

The Infinite Atonement Tad R Callister 9781573456234 Books Reviews

The Atonement of Jesus Christ is the single most important event in the history of the world. In the garden at Gethsemane and on the cross at Golgotha, the Savior took upon himself all the sins, shortcomings, sadness, depression, loneliness, disease--all the negative aspects of life--for all who have lived or ever will live. As Christians, one of our goals should be to gain a greater understanding of that transcendent act. This inspirational and well written book has helped me to do just that. I have never read a better book on this most important of subjects, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to draw closer to Jesus Christ.
Wow! What a fantastic book about the greatest thing that's ever happened for man! The words Brother Callister uses is amazing! I can't believe the research that would have been necessary to write such a book about such an amazing topic! When a person at my church recommended it to the classroom, I Immediately ordered a copy and I'm so glad I did. I simply couldn't put it down and read through it for the "first" time in about two weeks. Highly recommended by me! Thanks, Brother Callister.

Craig Madsen
I’ve read this book multiple times to increase my understanding of the Atonement. It is an incredible reference work documenting the atonement of Jesus Christ. This reading, I followed each reference to scriptures in the Book of Mormon. It again reinforced my testimony of the Book of Mormon’s many layers. The Book of Mormon is not just “Another Testament of Jesus Christ”, but the definitive testament of the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Thank you Tad Callister!
Tad Callister does an excellent job of approaching the atonement from many angles. He helps the reader come to appreciate the magnitude and importance of this most sacred and important act through a logical/analytical perspective. The read is a bit slow at times but is made up for this with the "ah ha" moments that come along with the deeper and well thought out examinations of Christ and of us and how the atonement can connect us.

The one thing I felt it could have had was more life stories of people coming unto Christ and being changed by the atonement. Many testimonial quotes of sorts from Marion G. Romney and Bruce R. McConkie but few on the personal experiences from them or anyone for that matter.

Overall thought felt like this was a great read. Very helpful for anyone trying to develop a better relationship with Christ.
A comprehensive look at the Atonement. This is not easy task, and in no way can come close to truly understanding the eternal while still dwelling in a 3D existence. It reads well and is categorized in a way that it can be used as a reference.
The problem with explaining the Atonement is that discussions tend to stick with temporal examples, like bikes, ditches, debts and boards with nails.
While the concept is necessary, it's easy to fixate on a single child's lesson and never move beyond that.
This book encourages deep contemplation and repeated approach.
Everything in this Church, as was true anciently, is focused on returning the acolyte constantly in thought and action to this central theme.
This book has completely transformed my husband and changed his heart. He struggled with pornography for 20 years and is a completely different person. He has spiritually awakened and now he's the spiritual leader in our home! I'm reading the book next!
I've read this book twice and I can't believe how many questions it has answered for me. It answered questions that have been in the back of my mind for years. This is not a book you can read cover to cover in a couple days and digest it all. It is deep and simple at the same time. It should be essential reading for any and every Christian!
Katie is working for the telephone company, but her family wants better for her. They are pushing her to accept the advances of Bart, who is in her social circle, but Katie isn't sure that she can fall in love with him even though her parents want her to. When Katie overhears a conversation over the phone, what she hears gets her involved in a mystery that will turn her world upside down and put her life in danger.

Will is taking care of the lighthouse, but his passion lies with weather forecasting. His brother is in town investigating piracy in the waters near the lighthouse. When his brother asks for help, Will is so accustomed to bailing his brother out that it isn't hard for his brother to talk Will into questioning a woman his brother knew in the past. Finding an abandoned baby isn't quite what he expected, but neither is Katie.

Katie is suspicious of Will at first, but his motives become clear through his actions. I really liked Katie's character and the way she worked through her issues. Her parentage is her main secret, but even she isn't fully aware of the extent of the secret. The parentage of the baby is also in question, and even though both Katie and Will love the child, they aren't sure they will be able to figure out who her real father is. Working to discover who's behind the acts of piracy throws them together and they come to care for each other.

As usual, Coble delivers a solid story full of romance and mystery. It's a great book and a nice addition to the series. The first book is The Lightkeeper's Daughter and the third is called The Lightkeeper's Ball. The characters from the first book are there in a minimal sense and you can read these out of order with no issues. I recommend this book.

The Lightkeeper Bride Mercy Falls Series #2 Colleen Coble 9781595542663 Books Reviews

This was an excellent book. It was uplifting as spiritual qualities came through. It has pirates and treasure, murder, kidnapping, an orphan who is kept by the lighthouse keeper who thinks it may be his niece. The heroine thinks it may be her father's. There is a smallpox epidemic. True love comes through when they put their trust in God. There are panicky moments with threats and knives, etc. At the end the family is healed and the main characters are going to be okay except for those who stole and murdered. This is an excellent book to read and is very adventurous.
Katie Russell enjoys her job as a telephone operator in Mercy Falls, California. She hears many things as she works the lines, but one night, a familiar voice catches her attention. Her friend Eliza disappears shortly thereafter, and Katie soon suspects that the crime may be linked to the new lighthouse keeper, Will Jesperson.

They form an alliance, trying to solve the mysteries that surround Eliza's disappearance, and it slowly begins to blossom into something more. But she is expected to marry well, not a lighthouse keeper with neither name nor fortune. Will she be able to look past society's expectations, as well as those of her parents? Will peace from God be enough for her future, no matter what or who is in it?

Collen Coble has done it again with The Lightkeeper's Bride. The second installment in the Mercy Falls Series, she weaves a tale of suspense, intrigue, mystery, romance, and historical drama. I couldn't put the book down, much like the first one. There was such a character contrast between the inquisitive Katie and Will's irresponsible brother Philip.

All in all, it had a very suspenseful plot and believable characters. There were times I wasn't sure if Coble was going to ever get to the happy ending as everyone was in one fix or another in this wild ride set in 1908, California. I learned a lot about the actual process of a telephone operator in this time period, and the book was a peek into the Progressive Era, of which I know little about. A wonderful book, and one I will recommend!
Katie Russell has a good job as the telephone operator for Mercy Falls, but that is just something to do. She has grown up as the daughter of the local Haberdashery owner and thus lived the life of a wealthy child. The home is teeming with servants, local society thinks highly of her, her church family thinks highly of her and life is good.

But one day she overhears an argument on the phone and the woman whose home the phone is in has now disappeared and it appears that foul play has taken place. Her infant daughter, Jennie, was abandoned and has no one to care for her. Through a strange series of events Katie thinks that maybe the baby is the responsibility of her father, but the new Lightkeeper thinks that the responsibility is that of his brother.

The mother of the child was a popular woman with the local men, so who knows who the father really is. But Will decides that he will take the baby to the lighthouse and take care of her until he can convince his brother to step up and do his duty. But he soon realizes that he is in over his head. He has to be up all night tending the lighthouse and then be up all day tending Jennie. It won't work.

So he asks Katie if she knows of a good nanny that he could hire. Katie adores the little baby and wants to help but what should she do. Right about this time a small pox epidemic breaks out in the town and Katie is not allowed to go home where her mother and the servants are all sick. So, she gets an elderly lady friend to join her in moving into the Lighthouse to help with the care of Jennie during the epidemic.

Now the fun starts. The romantic tensions rise. Katie has been committed to another relationship by her father, but one she is unsure of. Now she is with Will and the sparks start to fly. What does that mean.

Now, let's add in the intrigue of Pirates and ships being stolen. gold disappearing and strange things happening around town.

All in all it becomes a fun romantic, mystery and crime solving novel. The ending will be different than you think, which also adds to the fun.

It was a great summer read, sit on your porch, drink some lemonade and let Colleen take you out to the West Coast of the U.S. for a wonderful adventure in a lighthouse.

Enjoy!

A fascinating glimpse of the Russian Far East. Dersu the Trapper was an amazing man. I strongly suggest watching the video too, to get a fuller grasp of his life. It is an outstanding documentary, Anyone reading this should also read Vaillient's book "The Tiger" which provides more updated view of that region. This is Russia's equivalent of the Wild West -- expect that it is the Wild East. Instead of western Europeans encountering Native Americans, there are eastern Europeans and Chinese encountering people of Mongolian descent and other races. The two books in combination are amazing.
Before writing this short recommendation, I checked what other reviewers had already contributed, to see if there was anything I could possibly add. And no, my fellow 4 stars and up reviewers said it all. DaLaoHu's review appealed to me the most, because I think Kurosawa's film Dersu Uzala has meant as much for him , as for me. I also saw the film first and read the book many moons later, and while reading it Kurosawa's glorious images returned to my mind.Do yourself a favor and buy both.
I also checked DaLaoHu's other reviews, which led me to a number of books I was totally unaware of. Thank you DLH!
I borrowed a copy of this book and read it many years ago and while I don't remember it in detail at this moment (and I have just started to read it again) I remembered enjoying it so much that I wanted a copy of my own.
I have great admiration for those who master one, or a group of skills, to such a degree that they seem magical to the rest of us. This is the story of such a person. I have been a tracker for many years and was lucky enough to have been a man-tracker student of the Texas Ranger, Ab Taylor, so my admiration for the story of someone who has taken that to a level that is simply elegant, may be hard for some to relate to. Even so, it is a good read about the "Wild, Wild East" that you never realized existed.
I am a fairly successful big game hunter and can relate to what it takes to develop the many outdoor skills that Dersu, or anyone that lives closer to the earth than we do, had to hone to survive. Yesterday, it was very good for me to be able to tell that a mountain lion was ahead of me and tracking the same bull elk that I was. It completely changed the game (pun intended). If this type of material is of interest to you, please don't forget to read "Ishi, in two worlds" also.
This a beautifully story about the never ending battle between good and evil. The age-old contest between the sophisticated man, the city dweller and the free and unspoiled man of the wilds. It has been told many times. Unfortunately, since this is a Russian Novel evil wins and the good man, Dersu, dies. Arseniev obviously recognized Dersu as the noblest of all men and desired to protect him from the dangers of a modern society in vain. One often hears about an attempt "to find just one good man". Arseniev did find that man but civilization destroyed him as it seems to have done since the beginning of time. This tale is truly a masterpiece. This reader was enthralled by the seemingly effortless but beautifully descriptive imagery of Arseniev's accounts of his, and Dersu's, journeys through the wilderness. It broke my heart to learn of Dersu's death. however, Dersu was spared the cruelty of living through old age infirmities in the same manner as do the wild animals in the taiga. Life must move on. No wonder Kurosawa chose to make a movie about this absolutely beautiful story. Now I know that I must see the Kurosawa movie. The photograph on the front cover is perfect for this story. I recommend this book for all readers. It is priceless!
An authentic and very enjoyable account of the adventure of two friends, in a beautifully and unexplored wild region.

Arseniev is a government geographer, the leader of a survey expedition, who takes time to detail his observations of the landscapes, animals and birds of the Taiga. Dersu is a man from the past, one of the dwindling native Nanai people, with a unique perception of life. He has the ability and preference to live in the wilds, without any modern convenience. He represents lost knowledge and a gentler way of living. He exists in harmony with the natural world, with a dignity and respect for all living things - something often lacking in modern people.
An enthralling tale! It is really close to a page-turner, which I didn't expect with a chronicle of an early Russian explorer/naturalist/surveyor. Dersu himself is a charming fellow and wiser than anyone around him, made even more interesting by the respect and affection shown by the Russians he is guiding. Aseniev's descriptions of the flora and fauna he encounters are delightful and he tells of the hardships of his journeys in a sometimes matter-of-fact way, even when they are life-threatening. He loses his composure rarely, as is proper for a good expedition leader. There are also some sad passages about the terribly abused native peoples that Arseniev passes in his wilderness treks, shocking until you remember that all native peoples around the world have had the same cruel existence at the hands of invading "civilized" groups. In this particular region, they are usually Chinese trappers and merchants, as the border is very close, rather than Russians. I started to watch the film based on this book (the full 1961 movie, "Dersu Uzala", is on Youtube), but the English captions are difficult to follow while still watching the film. I'll get back to it, though, as it's highly recommended. The Kurosawa version of 1975 can be seen here http//www.dailymotion.com/video/xzmn4n_dersu-uzala-1975-pt-1_creation . The photo on the cover was taken on location during the filming of the Kurosawa version. I don't think I would get nearly as much out of the film if I hadn't read the book, first, because this is a time and place that's very obscure to Westerners - and even some Russians.
The author announced this for free on Amazon and I grabbed it right away! So thank you Ms Wynters for a highly erotic read!

Please note that this is a short story so no deeper meaning of one's existence could be found here.

Giselle is a plus-sized woman who hasn't experienced sexual satisfaction (ie the big O) in her almost 30 years and she's looking for something more. Due to a mysterious invitation, she decided to just take the plunge so to speak and went to the designated time and place.

I loved the concept of paranormal with erotica, I'm especially fond of the fae. The couplings were quite hedonistic and uninhibited, Giselle's deep-seated lust was awakened and it was bursting with life. Some words to better describe the sex are primal, carnal, sensual, wild, explicit, and the kind of satisfying that would leave one sated but still wanting more.

The author's creativity and imagination is a breath of fresh air. It's women like Giselle who are not the usual heroines. She represents the women who just want to feel desired and the forces of nature conspired to fulfill her needs. In this case, a fae. It's impressive how she was able to open her own store for plus size women. It's embracing and appreciating her self, that she doesn't need to be or try to be someone she's not.

From that short story alone, it says a lot. This is meant to be savored and enjoyed and a very interesting start to a series. I wonder who would get the invitation next.

Stay Where You Are And Then Leave john boyne 9780857532930 Books

Sometimes the best wisdom and perspective on adult issues is best received from the point of view of a child. Many know John Boyne's work from the moving story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which was made into an award-winning film. In his new book, Stay Where You Are and Then Leave, Boyne tells the story of the home front in London through the eyes of Alfie Summerfield. He says he remembers the start of the war better than most, since it was on his birthday, and put a damper on the celebration.

The ruined birthday party was only the beginning. His father signed up and went to the front. His neighbor and friend, who was born in London and lived all her life down the street from Alfie, but whose father was from Prague, was sent to a relocation camp on the Isle of Man. His mother worked a double shift at the hospital. His male teachers went to war, so retired teachers came to fill in. To help out his mother, who said they are "perilously close to penury," Alfie skipped school several days a week to shine shoes at the train station.

At first, Alfie's father wrote letters from his training camp, then from the front. Alfie's mother said the letters stopped because his father was on a secret mission. But Alfie discovered disturbing letters that his mother had hidden, giving a bleaker picture of the war and of his father's state of mind. When he learns that is father is in a hospital a train ride away from his home, he makes it his mission to bring his father home.

Boyne powerfully communicates the horrors of war, not through graphic descriptions of life and death at the front, although he does touch on that, but through his portrayal of life at home. It has been 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1, but Boyne reminds us, in a timeless way, of the lessons of that conflict, and the human story of families touched by the terrible finger of war. This is a book written for young audiences, but, like much great children's literature, deserves to be read by adults as well.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Stay Where You Are And Then Leave john boyne 9780857532930 Books Reviews

The name of the author is a guarantee. I think I read each of his books and never was decepted. Mr. Boyne is gifted with extraordinary sensibility, something you cannot learn but you are born with. This story is another example of it.
Excellent story of WWI, told from viewpoint of a boy whose milkman father has left for battle, then been returned with shell shock. Really well done.
When I happen onto a great writer, and I'm reading one of his great books, it amazes me how anyone can write that well. But, I guess that's what sets John Boyne apart from lesser writers.
I had read The Boy in Stripped Pajamas and enjoyed it a great deal. I did not know what to expect with this book but was drawn into the story as soon as I started to read. It provides a look into the first world war that is seldom provided to us...the perspective of a child. John Boyne has a wonderful ability to pull the reader into the story an make one feel that they are there. I have cried, more than once, reading his works!
Need I say more? Very heartfelt, emotional and descriptive. The relationships of a community during war. Beautifully done. Father, son, wife/mother, best friend, meaningful.
I really liked Stay Where You Are and Then Leave by John Boyne. This book has the same feel as J Boyne's other book - The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. I liked the character development - especially Alfie. Alfie is a little boy you like and want life to turn out okay for him. I liked the neighborhood and J Boyne did an excellent job of revealing the neighbors. I especially liked Joe Patience. I don't know what age this is intended for, but it would be good for jr & high school students.

I would recommend Stay Where You Are and Then Leave.
Charming. Some readers say this is a YA book; others consign it to a younger age group - but not too young, because of delicate sensibilities regarding the horrors of war; I say it's for YK (Young Kids), YA (Young Adults), and OA (Old Adults). As an OOA (Old, Old Adult), I found the book mesmerizing - a tender story with lots of positive human interactions (but also featuring some dark aspects of human relations), and a relatively positive ending. In fact, the novel could pass as an adult fairy tale. Lots of implausible coincidences, but in the long run important lessons to be learned about human behavior, with an ending that inspires hope for the future.

Alfie - 5 in 1914; 9 in 1918; 13 in 1922 - is both extraordinarily naïve and unnaturally sophisticated, at all three of these ages. Both characteristics are developed in highly positive ways. He is a very nice guy, in everything he does. This is so refreshing, considering the bad behavior of many fictional protagonists. I kept wishing there were more children just like Alfie.

While Alfie's story is the main thread running through the entire book, the author also gives major consideration to father-son relations (Georgie, his father, is well drawn), and to an aspect of war often neglected in World War I treatments, i.e., shell shock, or what we now call PTSD. So many books about WW I emphasize the horrific loss of life, on both sides, that dragged on for more than four years without any notable gain for either side. But Boyne highlights the equally tragic circumstance of those who managed to live through the carnage but were nevertheless permanently damaged psychologically.

Boyne also gives attention to life in England during WW I, by describing both general conditions on the home front and the activities of individuals - both the good guys and the not-so-good guys. In a relatively short book, he convincingly covers an amazing range of topics and scenarios. Of course I'm an avid Boyne fan, and "Stay Where You Are and Then Leave" convinces me that I should read everything he writes, whether it's theoretically for the YA set, or for YK or OA readers. 4-1/2 stars.

Gould is a terrific writer when on the right subjects, neatly and concisely laying out in a series of essays originally written as magazine columns some interesting trivia. When he sticks to evolution, he's incredible. When he veers in to the history of science, he can be uneven and long-winded, and the forays in to geology are largely pointless. When discussing the period from Darwin's first publishing of his theory to the widespread acceptance over the course of a generation, he focuses too much on one or two unimportant characters and misses the forest for the trees.
Which is a shame. The early chapters are great fun to read, and offer great insight in to how adaptation works. But unlike, say, Dawkins, Gould wanders about in an uneven fashion. That's expected somewhat in a book that is a collection of magazine pieces written over many years, unlike a purpose-written book. But some of these feel like an idea that had been sitting in a drawer for many years, he decided to write something about it, but didn't really have much to say. A good editor could have cleaned that up, but perhaps that would not have left enough material for a book.

The Mismeasure of Man Revised Expanded Stephen Jay Gould 9780393314250 Books Reviews

The Mismeasure of Man Stephen Jay Gould

The late prolific writer of natural history and natural selection concludes his The Mismeasure of Man with a line from Darwin,”If the misery of our poor be caused not by the laws of nature, but by out institutions, great is our sin.”

In The Mismeasure of Man, Gould yields perspectives on three centuries of race and racism, and how men of the fledgling school of psychology attempted to qualify and quantify their new science by half baked theory and methodology followed by bastardizing the intent of Binet’s intelligence testing. Binet said “intelligence cannot be abstracted as a single number. IQ is a helpful device for identifying children in need of aid, not a dictate of inevitable biology.”
Much of Gould’s manuscript concentrates on those, much to the contrary of Binet’s intent, who carried intelligence testing and ratings to obscene levels.

Gould explains and refutes the examples of statistical analysis used by the early to mid 20th century psychologists, which formed the basis for the Herrnstein and Murray 1994 work, The Bell Curve. Gould writes in regard to The Bell Curve, “So long as people remain on the top of the Social heaps by accident of a noble name or parental wealth, and so long as members of despised castes cannot rise, whatever their talents, social stratification will not reflect intellectual merit.” Though quite often long in word, Gould attacks and documents how this intellectual racism has and continues to inject itself into our culture.

Gould analyzes how “passive acceptance of common wisdom, of upper class Victorian males” evolved into “potent and evil nonsense that passed for certain knowledge,” and the repercussions that have historically manifested themselves. This became all too apparent with certain ethnic groups, Jewish refugees from Central Europe in particular, wishing to escape the coming Nazi holocaust, who sought to emigrate, were refused entry due to “eugenic propaganda”due to quotas based upon intelligence testing.

Gould was a prolific writer, whose voice, now absent, is needed more than ever.
The Mismeasure of Man, at times is a tough read, in particular the sections covering statistics and factor analysis, but Gould enables the reader to understand the continual fallacy of effort to quantify intelligence with a single number, and how this has affected us historically, and continues to do so today.
I love the way Gould gets to the heart of things and explains his arguments in an easy to understand way. I highly recommend this and any of his books to enlighten your knowledge of many subjects. I am not saying he is the final authority on any of these subjects but after reading him, I always feel I am better off for putting in the time to read his books.
Gould was one of the great minds of our time as well as a wonderful writer. Always a pleasure. Book is in great condition
This volume is a collection of Gould's earlier essays for the New York Museum of Natural History. They reflect his marvelous insight into the heart of current arguments in evolution studies, his knowledge of the history of the subject, and his take on life in general. The Panda's Thumb, entitled from one of these essays, is not quite as witty as his later works are, but his personable style and conversational approach make the book very readable.
One of the more interesting topics included is his discussion of the 19th Century rationale for prejudice against women and individuals of non-Western cultures. I found the very circular reasoning on the correlation between brain size and intellect and the misbegotten comparison of developmentally delayed individuals with individuals of other races particularly informative. The same kind of reasoning appears to be enjoying a destructive renaissance among social biologists today, most notably the authors of the notorious Bell Curve. The dissection of this type of faulty reasoning by an expert is instructive and a process well worth learning oneself and teaching to young people.
Some of the more admirable of Gould's writing habits, and well displayed in this book, are his ability to give fair voice to the opposition, his acknowledgement of the work of others, and his capacity to find value even in the faulty work of others. The latter is well demonstrated in his discussion of the 19th Century effort to locate a representative of a basic life form, a link between the living and the inert. In this essay he shows that good science is part hard work, part individual brilliance, and part being able to say "I was wrong in my thinking here."
The casual, approachable style, the brilliant and open mind, the logical approach to argument all make this an excellent book for anyone but would definitely make it a good book for high school students to learn the process of critical thought.
The Mismeasure of Man lays out the fallacies inherent in our too-frequent attempt at reifying something as complex as intelligence. Gould exposes the unfortunate history of our pseudoscientific endeavors where evident truth is traded for social dogma and institutional convenience. The implications of this history are alive today, restricting opportunity and stifling humanity’s chance at achieving true equality.

The Immortal Highlander The Highlander Series Book 6 Karen Marie Moning 9780440237563 Books Reviews

This is my favorite of the books- the heroine needs no convincing that Fae fairies exist- she sees them. And Adam is my secret fantasy male; the bad boy with the hidden good heart. If you read the preceding book, you know Adam was made mortal in order to save the MacKelter line from the blood bath. Several of the "twists" in the story revealed at the beginning of the book are that the Queen also made Adam invisible to both the other fairies and the mortals, thus Adam is completely alone with any immortal powers except the ability to shift-change for short distances. The second new element to the story is the introduction of a special moral family of females who can actually see fairies and has over the centuries been keeping a series of notebooks to aid others, our heroine is one such person with the power she inherited from her grandmother, a good Irish lass named O'Callahan. Out of necessity she and Adam are forced to team up to beat the "bad guys". Additional tie-ins to prior books include his reason for being in Cinncinati-to locate his son (book 3), and while looking through the journals, reference is made to the mid 800's and Dalkeith-Upon-the-Sea (books 1 and 2).
This book is Karen Marie Moning at her tongue-in-cheek best. My favorite passage occurs in the first chapters as Adam is still discovering exactly what it means to be a mortal male, he sees Gabby getting out of her car, is admiring her person just before realized that Gabby could see him and, in a panic she eludes his first effort to make contact with him. "It had just been made excruciatingly clear to him that the human male brain and the human male cXXk couldn't both sustain sufficient amounts of blood to function at the same time. It was one or the other, and the human male apparently didn't get to choose which one....How had mankind survived this?" There is one more seriously fun twist that brings it all together but farther into the story and I am not going to ruin the fun, although it is eluded to in the next installment of this soap opera, "Spell of the Highlander".
Well this book finally had an "ending" that the reader could close the book shut on and be satisfied with. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because a lot of times a character would ask a question and you would read for five to six paragraphs and there would be the answer mixed up with all this stuff you didn't need to read. Had to backtrack several times to see what the question was. BUT, that being said, this was a really great book especially if you've read the series one after the other. It seems I have one more book to read about someone being stuck in a old fashioned looking glass. Talk with you after I finish that one, then I move on to something else. I've tried very hard to be as truthful as I can with my reviews as it is important to the author and her readers. Always remember though everyone is different. See you in Scotland, if only in your dreams. Hugs!
I may be Karen Marie Moning's biggest fan, having read and loved every magical, unique novel she has published. I especially like "The Dark Highlander" and "The Kiss of the Highlander." Adam Black, our hero here, had small, but important roles in these two novels, and Ms. Moning does not disappoint with her latest, Adam's story. It is not necessary to have read her prior books to enjoy this one. "The Immortal Highlander" stands on its own.

Black belongs to "Tuatha De Danaan," a highly advanced race of immortal beings that settled in Ireland thousands of years before the birth of Christ. Although this race is called by many names, they are most commonly referred to as Fae or Faery. Frequently portrayed as tiny, luminescent creatures who flit around, the true "Tuatha De Danaan" are neither small nor benevolent. Adam Black is a rogue among his own kind. He meddles too much in the affairs of men, frequently taking on the human form of a tall, dark, and (you got it!), handsome male, powerfully built and extremely seductive. He is unpredictable, arrogant, mesmerizing...and Trouble, with a capital "T."

Aoibheal, Queen of the "Tuatha De Danaan," punishes Black for his interference in the world of mortals, by stripping him of his immortality and making him human. And to make matters worse, she curses him with the threefold power of feth fiada - which makes him invisible to mankind. No one can see him, hear him, touch him. And almost as bad, now he feels hunger, thirst, fatigue, lust, and loneliness. His own kind, although they can see him clearly, have been forbidden to acknowledge him. After months in this state, Adam is desperate.

Enter human female, Gabrielle O'Callaghan, who is (yes) lovely, intelligent and has the gift of sight. She can see both worlds - mortal and faery, which to her has always been a curse rather than a gift. Gabrielle can see and hear Adam. Once he finds this out, and he does very rapidly, he will not leave her alone. Besides wanting very much to seduce her, she may be the only means he has of communicating with humans or faeries.

Adam must persuade Gabrielle to help him in his quest to regain his immortality - a quest that will take them into a world of magic where they discover a conspiracy to destroy both mortal and faery realms.

As with Ms. Moning's other novels, this one has it all - romance, magic, time travel, extraordinary characters, great plot, writing that flows, and most important, an original theme and storyline. It just doesn't get better than this! Highly recommended!
JANA
The second book kicks off further from the first!

With art style interesting to look at, its easy-to-follow plot also holds a spirit of adventure. The female lead isn't girly and borders on being tomboy-ish, which makes her very relatable. On top of this, as I am an amateur fencer, the material in this graphic novel was generally legitimate as to what fencers would learn.

I can't wait for the next book!
Great combination of Jane Yolen and graphic novel format. Excellent story.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Curses Foiled Again"
Written by Jane Yolen
Illustrated by Mike Cavallaro
(First Second, 2013)
----------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE mild spoilers below
----------------------------------------------------------------
Veteran kids' lit author Jane Yolen continues her compelling graphic novel series in which a young high school age girl named Aliera learns she is the newly-chosen champion of the magical faerie world, a realm which coexists with our own, but can only be seen by a select few. In this sequel to "Foiled," Aliera begins to master her magical powers and confronts a troll army hidden in the bowels of New York City, transforming from a fantasy-reading, brainy kid who takes fencing lessons into a bold cosmic champion. This volume is faster-moving than the first, with strong girl-power messaging, more action, and some fun stuff for any readers who are into fencing as a competitive sport. Suitable for a wide range of younger readers. (DJ Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)
I've got to say I was somewhat underwhelmed with this one. I really enjoyed the first book and this sequel just didn't live up to it for me. The initial background story was never referred to; the mix of b/w and colour in the art doesn't make as much of an impression when one forgets that Aliera is color-blind in the first book, and references to a few names and places from her and Caroline's "rpg"-ing from the first book also fall flat. The story presented here was an ok fantasy, a quick divergence, but nothing out of the ordinary. Cavallaro's art is bold and dark when needed, his use of colour is bright and I've read a few of his works now that I know it is always a pleasure to enjoy his artwork.
Aliera is back for her second adventure and somehow this time there is a lot more trouble than in the first one. She's getting good grades, doing pretty well at her fencing and still managing to be the Defender of Faerie. Avery is making it much harder for Aliera to stay under the radar at school. All she wants is for everything to go back to how it was. It's looking pretty unlikely though. After all the faeries suddenly disappear, Aliera is thrown into another amazing adventure. There is a lot more information about and shenanigans from the trolls in Curses! Foiled Again. Avery has a much bigger part to play in this story and he's wonderfully written. I thought that Avery was possibly my favorite character this time around! There was also a great villain who was very unexpected. Overall, Curses! Foiled Again was just as good if not better than Foiled.
Aliera, against her will, has become the custodian of a magical foil that makes her the defender of the Fairy Court. She is confused and frightened by this development, but works hard on her swordplay skills and tries to do her best. So far, so good.

Avery, the super cute boy who is new at her school turns out to be a troll whose human glamour allows him to survive outside in the light. Luckily, he is obligated to be her knight and to follow her orders as she is, by virtue of the magical weapon, his liegelord. Again, still so far so good.

In fact, the story, characters, art work, and some sly and hip humor, make this a very appealing title.

MILD POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD; However, bear in mind that the two main characters meet cute, fight cute, diss each other cute, and annoy each other and us for most of the book. Aliera won't accept Avery's help even though he knows what's going on and is desperate to help her. So, page after page after page he trails around after her like some deeply dysfunctional puppy while she keeps insulting him, ignoring him, avoiding him and blowing him off. This continues even after Avery saves or protects Aliera several times. They must have a "Humans are stupid!, No, Trolls are stupid!" shouting match about every five pages. Really. And the problem is that in between these dopey exchanges there is some chemistry shown and there is some snappy dialogue. So the overall effect is "I like this book, I don't like this book, I like this book, I don't like this book", and so on.

And Aliera is all over the map. Sometimes she is insightful, courageous and perceptive. Sometimes she is whiney, dense and lame. For example, when she is taught how to become invisilbe she is almost hit by several different cars and buses because she keeps forgetting she's invisible, but then she is caught sneaking around because while she was invisible at one point she later forgot that she had made herself visible again. It's these bits, about every ten pages or so, that interrupt the enjoyment of the book and story, mainly because it's hard to root for Aliera and it's hard to stay in the story when she is in dopey or whiney mode.

And this is especially a shame because the drawing, panel design, and detail work in the art is very good, and apart from a tendency toward exaggeration at dramatic moments, it supports the flow of the story. Similarly, a number of secondary characters are well designed and appealing.

The upshot is that this is a very interesting if basically predictable book, well above average in terms of overall appeal, but it has weaknesses that may just bug you a little bit or may bug you a lot. Certainly worth a try.

Please note that I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a frank review.
Strong female characters, great writing, great artwork. My daughter loves this series.
I loved Foiled, and I loved this continuation of the story. For me, I'd prefer that Jane Yolen wrote for adults, but this graphic novel is for middle graders and it's a hoot. I predict that other fans of fantasy, urban fantasy, graphic novels, fencing and/ or Jane Yolen will be similarly pleased.
Sir Terry Pratchett has created an entire world, with its own culture, races, technology (mostly technomancy).....and myth cycles. Terry Pratchett and Jacqueline Simpson give Discworld fans a fascinating look at the terrestrial myths and mythic races (dwarves, elves, goblins, trolls) and creatures (vampires, werewolves, zombies, golems.) that gave rise to their Discworld counterparts.

One good example is Discworld elves. Sir Terry's elves (Lords and Ladies, The Wee Free Men) are closer to the myths of Europe and the British Isles than Tolkien and other recent fantasy writers. When Irish peasants referred to "The Lords and Ladies," "The Gentry," or "The Shining Ones," it was because they were scared shitless of them! They were beyond mischievous; they were capricious, often cruel.

He has re-interpreted other mythic races and creatures: Discworld vampires are basically the romanticized character we see in 19th and 20th century novels and 20th and 21st Century cinema; but, with interesting twists: "Black Ribboners" have sworn off human blood ("the b-vord") to integrate into society.

Discworld readers with an interest in folklore and mythology will find The Folklore of Discworld entertaining.

The Folklore of Discworld Terry Pratchett Jacqueline Simpson 9780385611008 Books Reviews

My son is a Terry Prachett fan, and I got this for his birthday. He loved it, said it provided the connections between Pratchett's various books and ideas. Very worthwhile, he read it cover to cover and then started rereading his Pratchett books and enjoyed how they connected in different ways for him as a result of reading this.
I have learned so much from reading this book. I already knew most of the Discworld stuff, as I've read most of the series; but the "real world" folklore that is woven into the book was mostly unknown to me. This has helped me understand a lot of literary references that used to sail right past.
Yet another product of Terry Pratchett's discworld series.

For trivia buffs and fans of the series. Shows some of the underpinnings and relationships between elements of the universe Sir Terry has brought us, with little tidbits of background information not in the original books.

You won't find new stories or events here, but looking at characters and places from another angle can deepen re-reading.
Terry Pratchett has done a lot of research into old English and European customs and superstitions to work them into his Diskworld novels, thoujgh always disguised as Diskworld customs and magic. In this volume we get to see what his research has provided.
This isn't a novel and there isn't a plot. But it does add some depth to the stories in the Disk World series, and lists many references to folk tales and historical records showing how and when some of the customs repeated on Disk World originated here on Earth
Terry Pratchett is a wonderful storyteller. It probably has to do with the fact that in the Discworld, stories happen to the characters, instead of the other way around. It's well known that things from our world often find their way into Discworld, and vice versa. If you've ever wondered where the heck Pratchett gets ideas for some of the zanier things that go on in Discworld, here's your answer! Many, many things that happen on Discworld have also happened in our world, either in reality, or in myth. This book was a wonderful read, and I was truly sad when I got to the end, because I wanted to read more and more. If you love folklore, myth, and other old stories, this book should not disappoint.
I have never read any of Terry Pratchett's books, but I have a deep love of folklore and mythology. And after reading this book, I am most definitely going to look into his books. The book is entertaining, full of interesting facts, and gives you a taste of Pratchett's Discworld. If you love mythology, folklore, or the Discworld universe, I recommend this book.

Shatter Me Tahereh Mafi Books

This book blew me away.

Shatter Me has undertones of dystopian fiction, but it is really its own entity. How do I explain this? Imagine that your favorite paranormal, superhero, and dystopian books were put into a blender to make one single book. That right there? That would be this book.

Now I think it's important I start off with the writing style in Shatter Me because that seems to be the one thing that might keep people from falling in love with this gorgeous book. I'll admit, Tahereh Mafi's writing style is unlike anything I've read before. It's eerily prosaic, wonderfully descriptive, and oddly disconcerting, all at the same time. Replete with strikethroughs and repeated phrases, it feels sometimes like you might be going crazy yourself. I think it's important to remember that the reader is inside Juliette's head during the story. This is a girl who hasn't seen another person, hasn't touched another person, for what seems to her to be an endless amount of time. Being in Juliette's head can be off putting, or it can be beautiful. It all depends on how much you allow yourself to be immersed in the girl, and the world, that is built here.

Juliette's character is what really brings Shatter Me to life. Constantly fighting a battle between the madness that she thinks still might consume her, and the giving person Adam knows her to be. Juliette is equal parts strong willed and vulnerable. The knowledge that her power can harm others cripples her, and she constantly wavers between feeling like a monster and a normal girl. Juliette truly has a power that can be used for good or evil, and both opportunities are presented to her. It might sound cliche at first glance, but I assure you that the girl on the pages is anything but that. Juliette's wariness at trusting others, her need to help even if she isn't sure if she should, her constant questioning of herself even when she's fairly sure that she is right, is all the product of her past. Tahereh Mafi builds up a girl who is believable and unique wrapped into one package. Juliette isn't perfect, and I loved her for that.

Shatter Me is definitely dsytopian, and the world that is built around Juliette's story is amazing. Cities crumble to the ground in the wake of The Reestablishment. People cower in doorways as what is left of society is patrolled, and essentially owned, by the soldiers who are loyal to the movement. The explanation as to how this came about hit very close to home for me. To say that this world is possible, well that's an understatement. I won't spoil anything, but I will say that there is a distinct possibility we really could get to that point. It made me ponder that, and that made me fall even further under the spell of this book.

If you can't tell from my musings above, I fell madly in love with this story. Devouring 120 pages in half an hour let me know that I was in for the long haul. I admit that I know that it won't be for everyone. As I mentioned, the writing style is different and might put some people off. However I can honestly say that if you give it a chance, if you allow yourself to fall wholeheartedly into Juliette's world, you might just find a story that will immerse you like it did me. Shatter Me is a refreshingly unique read that I enjoyed thoroughly. If there is indeed a sequel coming, I can't wait!

Shatter Me Tahereh Mafi Books Reviews

I had seen this around a lot and a lot of people had recommended it, but it wasn't really high on my TBR list, and I just kept putting if off. But I eventually gave in. This was not what I was expecting at all. There is an interesting writing style, sort of contradictory I guess is the best way to describe it, when the story starts the main character has spent almost a year in an insane asylum, so she questions everything, including her own motivations, and this certainly makes it unique. I thought it would focus a lot more on the world building of the dystopian aspects like most first books in a series do, but instead it focuses much more on the characters, and in particular how the main character discovers what has happened and what it takes to live in this world. We discover things as she does, and I thought that was done very well. The plot is solid, with a steady pacing, and I loved every second of it. The ending was amazing and possibly the best part of the book, there's no cliffhanger at the end, but by the end I was so invested, I didn't need one to want to read the next book so bad. I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I would, it's just a great read, definitely unique and different from other dystopians, and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This book made me question a lot of things - firstly, about why it is so hyped, and secondly, what are others seeing that I am missing out? I genuinely had to ask some of my friends what they thought of the book, because I saw so many high-rated reviews for it (not from my friends but others I follow on GR) and I mostly got 'eh I didn't like it much either' kind of answers. Maybe it was the time in which it released - the era of dystopias, but this is more like a romance set in a dystopic world than a true dystopia. Honestly, this book takes the love triangle to a cringe-worthy level, and WAIT I KNOW YOU MAY HAVE LOVED THIS BOOK BUT I GOTTA GET MY FEELINGS OUT IN A RANT before I can even continue with what I actually liked. Buckle your seat belts, darlings, because this one is going to be gif-fed up!

Firstly, I gotta ask - WHY? Why the focus on the romance in a dystopia? I am not one for sticking to genre conventions - heck, I love when books subvert them and introduce some new elements. But the 'new elements' in this weren't exactly new. There's the childhood friend who is now a hottie trope. Bad boy with (probably) a heart of gold trope (We'll come to that LATER OH BOY). No, what my main problem was with this book sticking its toe out of genre boundaries, is that it does it in the name of the most irritating love triangle. AND I LIKE LOVE TRIANGLES! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME?!

Also, how in this messed up world where people don't have proper living conditions, is the romance the main conflict of the story? It is not even a dystopia-that-looks-like-a-utopia kind of plot that love triangles are usually featured in! The world is dying, there is a fascist government ruling over them, and the first thought of these teens is whether they can get some. (It is not my imagination - there are literally scenes where the making out just happens, due to Circumstances That Just Need to Insert a Hot Makeout Scene) The world-building is sorely lacking in this book - there is barely an explanation given for how the Reestablishment came about, how it is all co-ordinated, how the resistance is not able to do any damage.

Adam is this hero complex guy who liked Juliette when she was younger because she acted soooo good, lay down while other kids were tormenting her and stuff. He, of course, defended her and beat up the other kids, but his double standards are such that he admired her for not fighting back?! The romance with him would have been more believable if there was some actual development, but considering it is all silence glances in the start and very little conversation on her part, I'm declaring this as insta-love and a case of I-need-human-touch-STAT. I get that Juliette didn’t have anyone to touch for years, but that doesn’t mean his touch will immediately comfort her in every circumstance. It is more like an excuse to have them kissing again and again.
Also his actions don't make much sense in the context of what he does have to lose from helping her - don't get me wrong, I liked that he didn't turn out to be shady or a backstabbing betrayer, but I also don't see why he would risk so much with barely a plan.

And the writing doesn't help matters, really. Sure, there is the fact that this is narrated as Juliet's thoughts, so we get a very close understanding of what she is going through, and some crossed out sections where we see her replacing what she wants to say with what she actually says. But why did there have to be so many METAPHORS?! I get that Juliet loved books a lot, but I have read like over 2000 books in my life, and I don't talk inside my head like everything is inexplicable without a weird metaphor attached to it. It gets too much at time, like body creaking like a staircase? Also, another weird quirk is sometimes numbers are used instead of the words for numbers, which kinda ruins the flow in a sentence. And this may be minor, but why the heck is Juliette gasping so much? This girl is made up of being surprised all the freaking time.

Adam lifts her up? Gasp! Castle agrees with her on something? Gasp! Warner being his usual terrible self? Gasp! Adam kisses her? You guessed it right - Gasp! (Actually the last one can be forgiven but I'm not in the mood)

And let's move on to the other part of the triangle -Warner - by the way, does it count as love triangle if one guy is just being plain obsessed with her even when she is like 'eww no dude get away from me'? He literally thinks she is like him, and they have a CONNECTION and she just HAS TO BE AT HIS SIDE as he rules over his corner of the world.

Dude, why are you so dense? He constantly invades her personal space and treats her like a possession than a human being capable with her own agency. How is he even a love interest? Also, this book had his short story attached, to which I am only going to say nah, doesn't excuse what you did, you ass. He knows Juliette was psychologically tortured, and his idea to make her better is to psychologically torture her more? How is he even justifying torturing her considering what he himself went through?

Finally, let's get to the parts that I did like - I liked the getting into Juliette's head way of narrating this book. She is a character kept in the dark (literally and metaphorically) so she sort of reveals the terrible world as she goes through the book. She also shows resourcefulness, and a hint of grey morality when it comes to getting things done (still, stay away from her, Warner!). But what I really liked was in the second half, when we get to meet the X-Men other people like her. I mean, she is basically a stand-in for Rogue, and there's this secret underground bunker where other mutantspowered people live, so I was excited about that, and what that would mean for this story. But it does arrive like pretty later in the story, so my enjoyment of that was already affected by my irritation with the love triangle.

Overall, this is a book that I wanted to love, majorly because I love books about powered people but the focus and main storyline of the book had me disappointed in it.

Oratoria, Alma and Pilar are tough, gritty, memorable women, heroes in my book, much worthy of admiration. In fact, every character in this great story is memorable, and that is a sign of truly great writing.

The Sandoval Sisters' Secret of Old Blood The Sandoval Legacy Sandra Ramos O'Briant 9780615615103 Books Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book, from the first page to the last. Sandra has a wonderful writing style through which she weaves the stories of three sisters in and out and in again. The characters are memorable, the time is fascinating, the story is compelling, and it ends entirely too soon. Even if you are not typically a reader of historical fiction, I highly recommend this book.
This is a book about personal power and what women achieved because they were willing to "speak their truth". This is a book that every parent should give to their daughters, regardless of whether their daughter are 15 or 65. This is also a book that every parent should give to their sons.
It portrays women as "real" and strong.
A wonderful story that I could not put down, and never wanted to see it end. Being an hispanic woman in the southwest I have hungered to hear the tales of the women who pioneered this land, of which you hear so little and my family has been in the general area of Texas-New Mexico for the past 200 years. Much like The Sandoval Sisters, but my family did not have the good fortune to pass on from generation to generation the hardships, etc. We just did what we had to do to survive. I am so excited about this book I have told all my women friends and family that this is a must read, especially if you are of hispanic heritage. The southwest was not populated by men of strong character only, but the women too. We were there. We still are. Ms. O'Briant did her research well and the historic times and happenings. A must read. Thank you, Sandra Ramos O'Briant. Keep writing.
This is a well written and thoroughly-researched look back at part of our history that has not been well documented. Fascinating. And the thought of taking a much older lover has never been more erotic, enticing....

The story revolves around strong women, sisters, who survive the Mexican-American war in the mid-1800s. Along with the family dynamics and drama, blend in some witchcraft and mysticism, and this is one compelling story.

Highly recommended.
This is a fascinating family saga from the viewpoint of the sisters of the Sandoval family who live in New Mexico. The story is one of survival in a time in history when New Mexico is struggling for its independence, and the sisters are doing the same. Women at that time had nothing but marriage and raising children as an option in their lives, but these women go their own way and succeed while incorporating the past (curandismo and revealing diaries of past Sandoval women) into their futures.
THIS IS A TERRIFIC READ ABOUT A TIME IN OUR HISTORY THAT WE REALLY DON'T HEAR MUCH ABOUT THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR. MS. O'BRIANT HAS WOVEN A TALE OF THREE SISTERS, TWO OF WHOM HAVE A HISTORY DATING BACK TO THE 1400'S. ALL OF THE WOMEN IN THE FAMILY HAVE COPIOUSLY WRITTEN EXTENSIVE DIARIES, WHICH THE FOLLOWING FEMALE GENERATIONS HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF, AND IN SOME CASES, USE TO THEIR ADVANTAGE, IF ONLY TO UNRAVEL SOME OF LIFE'S MYSTERIES.

AFTER JUST A FEW CHAPTERS, THE READER IS WELL AWARE THAT THE AUTHORESS HAS DONE SKILLFUL RESEARCH AND WEAVES HISTORICAL FACTS INTO A TALE OF LOVE, HEARTBREAK, HUMAN FRAILTIES, THE THROES OF WAR, PERSONAL STRENGTH, AND THE DILEMMAS AND ART OF BEING A WEALTHY, INTELLGENT WOMAN IN THE LATE 1800'S.

MS. O'BRIANT'S DEPICTION OF THE OLD TOWN OF SANTA FE WITH THE SMALL MINDS AND SPINSTERISH GOSSIP, NOT TO MENTION FEAR OF BLACK MAGIC OR JUST THE UNEXPLICABLE, IS WELL DEFINED. AND NEW ORLEANS TAKES ON A HISTORICAL DIMENSION THAT WE ARE REALLY NOT THAT FAMILIAR WITH. THE READER IS ACTUALLY IN SANTA FE DURING THE AMERICAN INVASION AND WE EXPERIENCE THE SHOCK OF THE MEXICANS ON ONE HAND LOSING THEIR LAND AND THE JUBILATION OF THE AMERICANS GAINING TERRITORY.
This was one of the best books I've read this last year. It had everything from great characters, suspense, romance, and an intriguing plot. The book captured the lives of the Sandoval sisters in the mid 1800s and it included lots of good history about the United States and Mexico during that timeframe. The author did an amazing job of weaving all of this together to make a very exciting story. Her writing skills brought the characters to life with many moments of lightheartedness, laughter, and sadness. I couldn't put the book down. Immediately the first pages drew you into the story. I am looking forward to seeing more works by this author. Hopefully it will be very soon.
Purchased as a gift. I didn't know what a board book is and it has been abridged cutting out some important story line. Disappointed. This is a lifelong favorite. How long it was read to me and later I read to my daughter. I suggest you buy one of the other versions preferably hardback. When I read it to my daughter I always paused before turning the page to talk about the wonderful illustrations. "and there are the kids skinny dipping" or "there the Little House is very sad to be in the noisy dirty crowded dark city'" She's gone now and may have to buy another copy. Or more, to donate to the school or library. Or family with young children. Remember not this version it's been edited

Little House Sandpiper Books Virginia Lee Burton 0046442181563 Books Reviews

This is a sweet, classic book. It is rather text-heavy, so at this point, with a nearly two-year-old, we do a lot of paraphrasing and explaining what we're seeing in the illustrations.

Our son thinks the house is neat to look at, especially as the pages turn and the house has many different backgrounds.

Once we get to the actual story with him, I have a feeling he might find it kind of sad, but it does have a sweet ending--if we can get that far.
My mother used to read this book to me and my sisters when we were children, and I was so happy to find this for a reasonable price on to share with my own daughter. The listing states "READ ALONG BOOK AND CD" I DID NOT receive a read-along version, just the paperback book, which is lovely but not as described in the listing title hence the 4 stars. The book itself I give 5 stars, the illustrations are lovely, the story timeless-this listing is just not accurate.
The Little House sits in the pastoral countryside and watches as bit by bit roads, buildings and finally a full city surround it. The family that owned it drifts away and it sits empty. Will the now run-down and forgotten little house find a new life?

You wouldn't think such a simple story could be so powerful but the beautiful art and timeless story of our idealized past vs the changing world really make it work. It's worth a read with your kids, but bring a hankie.
I cannot believe I had never heard of this book before! A colleague shared it with me. It is a fantastic resource to use when teaching rural, suburban, and urban communities and/Or how communities change over time! I used it at the beginning of my social studies unit, and it was amazing to refer back to with my second graders. They just loved the illustrations and storyline, and it helped make the standards more understable and clear to them. They constantly went back to borrow and read this book! Fantastic book. Highly recommended as an addition to a classroom and/or personal child's library.
When I was a little girl, my mother often took us to the public library to let us check out our own books. One of my absolute favorites was "The Little House" by Virginia Lee Burton. What a thrill it was to find it again nearly 50 years later -- and to discover the magic was still there!

As its title implies, "The Little House" is the story of a house in the middle of the countryside. For many years, the house stayed content in the same spot, watching the seasons go by -- until development comes along, turning the country roads into streets, the farmhouses into tract housing, tract housing into apartments and apartments into high rises -- leaving the little house dwarfed and neglected amidst the tall buildings, traffic and hustle-bustle of the city. Without giving away the rest of the story, there is a happy ending for the little house!

Equally charming as the story are the illustrations, also done by Virginia Lee Burton. It shows the house in basically the same spot throughout most of the book as the world changes around her. She even gives the house some character using the windows as her "eyes" and the two front steps as her "mouth" -- and you feel sorry for her as she becomes more and more forgotten.

Even though the story was written 70 years ago, it is still just as relevant today as it was then -- especially as more and more of our open spaces are being taken over by development. (Maybe that's why I still feel a little sad whenever I see new housing in previously unspoiled land.) And "The Little House" was also where I first learned about the changing of the seasons!

Along with this edition of the book is an audio CD of the story, both with and without page-turn signals, as well as a forward by Burton's son!

I highly recommend this timeless tale!
I used to read this at my grandparents' house when they were still alive. I was a child and loved the fact that this little house was so resilient against any challenges the changing world put before it.

I'm 35 now. Life has it's ups and downs. I've been through plenty of seasons and I still stand. I still smile. I finally remembered enough to find this book and it moves me to tears as an adult. So basic. So hopeful. I love it more than ever. Thank you, Virginia. You have really given me a gift here. I encourage the world to check it out.
I love this book, but please be aware that the board book version does not contain the whole story. The text has been abridged, so that you still have the same number of pages, but the text on each page is shortened. This means that you miss out on things like the little house wondering what it would be like to live in the city. The book is probably still enjoyable to someone new to the story (and may be preferred by some for very young babies with short attention spans), but if you are fond of the original, I recommend purchasing a different edition.
This book has generated an incredible amount of buzz, but having read it I have to believe that the buzz was caused by the concept rather than the execution. Ms. Mbue had a great idea -- to juxtapose the aspirations of marginally legal immigrants from Cameroon with the family of an executive at soon-to-die Lehman Brothers in 2008. There's a lot that could have been done with that juxtaposition, but Ms. Mbue doesn't achieve it.

First, the plot. There are authors that can take historical events that are known at the outset and nonetheless create excitement, but Ms. Mbue isn't one of them, or at least not yet. I spent my time waiting for the inevitable rather than dreading it. The immigrant couple's travails are no less predictable.

Next, the characters. There are times when one or another character seems alive, but those times are too infrequent and too far apart. For the most part, they are flat; the literary equivalent of stick figures or outlines that have no substance to them.

The dialogue is similar, predictable and flat.

I have never written a book, and I know it's not an easy task. And I respect Ms. Mbue for trying; she has written a book that is readable and has an interesting concept, and it will be interesting to see if she can build upon this first effort and become a better or even a great writer. However, this book screams "first novel" and just doesn't cut it for me.

Behold the Dreamers Oprah Book Club A Novel Imbolo Mbue Books Reviews

This novel is based on a very current topic immigration to the United States . It portrays the problems and emotions from the side of the immigrants. Although the u. S. Immigration policies should be followed, after reading this book , one feels the pain of those who truly believe that the US is the only land of opportunity and great promise. The disappointment that these people feel is painful!! It is truly a sad problem .
This is one of the best books I've read in a while and I'll be recommending wholeheartedly to friends and family. Great insight on the lives of these characters, the struggles of this poor immigrant family and the struggles of this wealthy American family. Great reminder that regardless of our social status, we all face challenges.
The time 2008

The place New York City. Well, to be exact a corner office on Wall Street with floor to ceiling windows offering a breathtaking view, a posh Upper East Side apartment that is decorated to the nines and a one-bedroom, cockroach-infested fifth-floor walk-up in Harlem.

The main characters Clark Edwards is a hotshot investment banker at Lehman Brothers, while his beautiful, too-thin wife, Cindy, spends her time shopping, lunching and summering in the Hamptons. Jende Jonga, an illegal immigrant from Cameroon, supports his wife, Neni, and their 6-year-old son, Liomi, doing whatever jobs he can find that do not require proof he is in the United States legally. Neni is in the country on a student visa and attends the local community college with dreams of becoming a pharmacist.

The situation Clark hires Jende to be his and the family's full-time chauffeur, paying him $36,000 a year for 18-hour days. Jende is beside himself with happiness and hope for the future.

And then…Lehman Brothers collapses.

This magnificently written story by Imbolo Mbue is told entirely from the points of view of Jende and Neni. Clark and Cindy's stories we learn from eavesdropping on their phone conversations while Jende drives them around New York City. Jende and Neni have very little, but they are bursting with dreams and hopes for the future. Meanwhile, Clark and Cindy are impossibly wealthy but have only faded hopes and squashed dreams. It is this contrast, even more than the differences of race, class and wealth, that sets up the story for the main plot when life for both couples irrevocably and tragically changes forever with the failure of Lehman Brothers.

This remarkable story about the American dream—for those who desperately want it and those who indifferently have achieved it—is written with such verve and wisdom that it pierced my heart and soul. I highly recommend this book, which amazingly is Mbue's first novel. I eagerly await her second book.
very interesting read about the experience of African immigrants coming to the United States. Without firsthand knowledge, the issues and struggle seemed very well represented. The characters were inconsistent - sometimes you really liked them and at other times, you struggled to want to support them - but it all seemed very realistic and more appropriate that books where people are either good or bad. Well worth the read.
Behold the Dreamers is at once haunting, profound, and imminently readable. Mbue skillfully captures both the essence of Cameroonians in the diaspora, and the world of Wall Street during the 2008 recession. Weaving together the stories of 2 couples, profoundly different but bound together in their common humanity, she shows how the American dream ultimately eludes and almost destroys them both.

As founder of a US 501C3 in partnership with my Cameroonian sisters and brothers to build a residential secondary school in Cameroon, I have traveled there numerous times. Mbue captures the essence of the strong sense of family, overflowing love and hospitality that I have been blessed to experience in Cameroon. I have often felt that we Americans have much to learn from them. In our pursuit of material well-being here in the US, we have lost the palpable spirituality and deep joy of many Cameroonians, in spite of the overwhelming hardships many face.

Kudos to Imbolo Mbue for capturing so eloquently that which often eludes explanation. Highly readable, fast moving, and skillfully crafted, Behold the Dreamers will stay with you long after the last page is read.
The Rev. I am from the area in Minnesota where this novel is set. None of the beauty of the North country is brought to life in this book, nor indeed in this series. She used some town names but failed miserably to breathe the soul of Minnesota and her history into the pages. The story line is simple, and has been told before by a hundred others. In some of her previous works, I was left with a sense of great anticipation when I was forced to leave the world she created to attend to my own daily tasks. Not this book. I kept forgetting I was reading it.
Excellent book. It moves easily from one subject to the next. I recommend it to everyone who has read the other books before it and can also be read alone. I enjoy reading books that are in a series because you really get to know the characters like family.
Lorraine Snelling is one of my favorite authors and this book is an example of her great character developments, story, and values.
This book was just as good as her first 2 in the series. You can't go wrong reading the whole series. Very good book
Great story(I read all 3 books) and wishes for more books!I have never read a Lauraine Smelling book I didn't love x 10
What a great addition to this series this book was. Great characters and superb story line. Would highly recommend this series to everyone that enjoys a great read.
I preordered this book the end of October and paid $10.99 for it and now see it sells for $8.63. Which is a bit irritating. Overall these three books are very similar to the Ingeborg books but still enjoyable reads.
Snelling gently weaves the reader into the fabric of the character 's lives. I am looking forward to the finding out who Nilda chooses. And I am wondering when the story will return to Blessing and a wife for Thorliff.

Drinkwater A Sobering Tale About A Medieval Knight Otto Scamfer 9781438234915 Books

I ordered this book because it was set in the Medieval era. Though the setting was the rreason I ordered the book, I soon realized that this book depended on its plot and story line rather than the setting. In fact, the story itself is timeless. If you are looking for a great, well-told story, this is it. The main character (Winston) is well-drawn through his own point of view while he other characters (with the exception of William Stanton and maybe Donovan) are not fully developed. The villain is just plain unpalatable and does nothing to indicate he's anything other than a sniveling bully. The ending, I think, is a modern one and underlines the main character's change from the beginning of the story. There are a few technical errors such as "your" vs. "you're."
Drinkwater A Sobering Tale About A Medieval Knight Otto Scamfer 9781438234915 Books Reviews

Amazing. Usually dont read it but it was really good I liked it.... Had eyes on it and wanted to read ahead than where the class was.
I couldn't finish this book. While the story may have good points, the neverending theme seems to be the evils of drink... on, and on, and on.
All the stupid romantic nonsense of romantic medieval novels are missing from this. Thankfully. At least, til the end. Good plot, nobleman on the run, hoping for revenge.
A quick read. Nicely written. Somewhat predictable, but entertaining. Great for teens and adults. A tale about a young man wronged by a close friend and his quest to avenge his family's death.
Not a bad story line but quite focused on alcoholism. Spelling and grammar errors and could really use an editor.
I could not stop reading Drinkwater, finally putting the book down at 2am when I could no longer focus on the words. The book is written in the first person and is told by the main character, Winston Tabor. The first person narrative takes some getting used to, but it helps flesh out Winston's character. Imagine how hard it is to overcome alcoholism, then imagine doing it in a time when water was often unhealthy to drink! That's what Winston is battling, along with being framed for his father's murder. The story goes from one adventure to another while Winston comes to terms with his alcoholism and the difficulty of sobriety.

Whether you like Medieval fiction or adventures, I think you will find this an enjoyable book. I am looking forward to more books from Otto Scamfer.
What can a younster son of a local lord, living with all that he needs, without a selfcontrol, can achieve in life?
He is a drunkard, a rebelious youngster, without obligations, until an envious and evil man changes his life, for ever.
Although a short book, it's a good lecture, easy for young people. Good narrative, describes very well the day to day life o the main character of the story.
"you're." These, however, are only noticeable by a spelling Nazi and do not detract from the overall effect of the story.
I absolutely adore this book! My 5th grade daughter, who has “severe Tourette’s”needed a book to read for a book report. I’m not even sure HOW I found this book, but I’m so glad I did. The conflicts, relationships, parental angst, as well as those who quietly help her find courage make this a wonderful read. It’s wonderful to find humor woven through her struggles. It’s also real. It expresses the physical, as well as emotional pain one goes through. If you are looking for a seriously GOOD read, with some insight on an often misunderstood medical issue, please, enjoy this book.
What happen to my order? And how do i contact a representative?
This book really touched my heart and i would definitely recommend this book. I hope everyone enjoyed this book as much as i did!
The book was in the right direction of showing how not everyone is alike. We all have our own issues. But the story line wasn't what I thought. It talked about disfunctional home life compared to ticks. Not a very good comparison some of the content could've been wrote differently. My son and I read it together and he wan't very into the story either.
Family member recently diagnosed with Tourette's .....so factual & easy reading for any pre teen or teen faced with problems encountered at school & at home. Especially liked the educational Q & A about Tourette's at the end of the book.
I really like this book. I has helped to understand my son more.
If you want some insight on how Tourette's effects a child and their family, this is a good book. It should be given to any teacher, parent or child that is dealing with this syndrome.
I read this book to help my granddaughter with her homework/book report, and enjoyed it very much. This is a great tool to help adults and children alike, to understand that these people are just like them, and that just because they have this disorder, it doesn't mean that they don't have the same needs and wants as they do.

Hit List Darcia Helle 9781442189409 Books Reviews

This book starts where mother seems to be losing her mind, forcing her son to move back home and wonder if he should put her into an institution. How can a parent go from "normal" to a babbling child hiding in a closet in just one day? Follow Ian along while he tries to save his mother, with therapists and a private detective agency. Trust me; this book takes you places you never expect to go. There are surprises all the way to the end. This is the first book of Darcia Helle I have read, and I promise you it is not the last! Pick this one up, you will not be disappointment.
Ian finds his mother huddled in a closet holding a baby blanket and muttering words that don't make sense. She is convinced someone is watching her and everyone thinks she is crazy. After taking her to a psychiatrist for a while without any change, he decides to hire a private detective to find out what happened to her that day. It turns out his mother isn't so crazy after all. This book has lots of twists and turns and keeps you guessing through most of the book. This is the first book I've read from this author and I'm looking forward to reading more!
One of the best detective stories I have read in a long time. Darcia Helle's beautiful green eyed private investigator Lucianna Martel (Lu) pulled me in right from the start. Her ex-cop uncle Vinnie is an amusing and formidable character as well. Hit List has a great plot, very readable and believable characters, and just enough romance sprinkled in to keep your appetite piqued. It is fast paced, and loaded with twists and turns. This is the first Darcia Helle novel I've read, it will not be my last. She has quickly jumped to the top of my to read list. If your looking for something to read that keeps you turning the page, I highly recommend this first rate detective thriller. Very well done Ms Helle.
Hit List if full of surprising plot twists and nerve racking suspense. Even though alternating between several different viewpoints, it was not confusing or irritating and served to further the plot and develop the characters. Ian's love for his mother was touching and I liked the fact that he refused to institutionalize her, but instead did everything he could to help her and to find out what caused her sudden insanity. Lucianna was a great character, smart and funny, and I liked how her relationship with Ian progressed. The author built the suspense slowly and everything was finally revealed in the end. Great dialogue, very realistic, excellent plot (there is a bit of language and some references to child prostitution, which is part of the part and is not explicit). I really hope there are more Lucianna stories in the future; especially with her Uncle Vinnie and his friends - they really know how to close a case.
Plot/Storyline 4 Stars

This compelling mystery is filled with twists and surprises. Just when I thought I had something figured out, I found out I was wrong when a new revelation was revealed.

There is a romance thread entwined in the storyline. For the most part, the author kept it from taking over any portion of the story. Although there were a few times that I thought Lucianna should stop checking out Ian's butt, it did not spoil any of the suspense.

Unfortunately, I did find one portion of the work to be particularly unbelievable. The mystery begins with why Ian's mother, Corrinne, has basically lost her sanity. It is figured out that she is blocking a horrible memory. When the reason was revealed, I was rather disappointed. I just couldn't fathom `that' as a good enough reason for Corrinne to have such an intense reaction. Sure, she would be upset, even horrified, but to go insane? I think not.

I enjoyed the flow of this book. All scenes contributed to the storyline with no wandering off into the ionosphere as many mystery writers tend to do for filler. Also well done was the building of tension and foreshadowing by showing the different viewpoints. Ms. Helle managed to do this without giving away too much, but also without leaving the reader feeling as though the technique was forced.

Character Development 4 Stars

Ian An excellent main character. He was a strong male protagonist without overwhelming the story with male hormones.

Lucianna Another excellent main character. She was a good, strong female lead. Yeah, she had some hormonal issues, but they did not stop her from doing her job, and she didn't turn `girly' during the action.

Vinny My favorite character. Think "Joe Pike" from the Elvis Cole novels by Robert Crais.

Corrinne With the exception of the reason behind the issues of this character, the author did a great job of portraying her insanity. However, after getting the explanation for her mental illness, this character's development halted and failed abysmally.

Writing Style 5 Stars

This author was obviously born to pen great mysteries. Her suspense techniques were excellent, keeping me glued to my . The descriptions were concise and placed only where needed to set appropriate scenes. The dialogue was realistic.

Editing/Formatting 4 3/4

The editing was of professional quality. The formatting was good with one exception Throughout the novel, there were asterisks used to show scene changes. However, a few times, these were missing causing some confusion.

Rating R for Adult Language and Situations, references to Child Abuse, Molestation, and Prostitution, and Violence.

Maximum Ride Saving The World And Other Extreme Sports James Patterson Books

I really am enjoying this series so far. This book has just enough action to keep me interested without it being a constant feeling of reading a movie script that is all about explosions and fighting and nothing else. I won't bore you with a plot summary because I know other reviewers are fond of doing that. If you liked the first book in the series, I recommend you get this one. The characters really grow, especially the main one, and they really do seem like a family. This book shows just how stupid really really smart people can be when they don't think outside the box in the exact right way or they don't understand human nature. Let's be clear, even if they're not 100 percent DNA-wise, our characters are still human where it counts. That's as much of a plot as you're likely to ever get out of me unless a book I read is so confusing that I can't help but ask questions in my review simply to get them out of my system. Unless you have a heart of ice, you'll really feel for the characters in this book if you're not "too old" for a book about teenagers and children. Give it a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It can be quite a wild ride at times keeping up.

Maximum Ride Saving The World And Other Extreme Sports James Patterson Books Reviews

I recently downloaded the app for my iPhone and found James Patterson's "The Angel Experiment" as a free download. I began reading it and about 6 hours later I was done. I downloaded book #2 and two days later found myself downloading book #3 "Saving the World." I have been very impressed with the way Patterson has made this fiction series so entertaining and fun to read. I also highly recommend that anyone with an iPhone check out the app. Reading small portions of text in this format make reading so much easier, quicker, and fun.

I have been quite pleased with the way Patterson lets you get to know his characters. I find myself starting to develop a bond with them and when they find themselves in trouble, which happens frequently, I feel as though I am right there with them.

While "Saving the World" is more focused on global warming and other environmentalist causes than previous books, it is a very exciting and quick read. I recommend it to anyone that enjoys good fiction.
After I read Maximum Ride 1, I couldn't wait to find out what happened to these characters. In the first one, you meet Max (the leader), Fang (like second in command), Iggy (really awesome blind kid), Nudge (sweet hopeful girl), Gazzy (very energetic and loveable), and Angel (youngest but likely the smartest). You meet other characters like Jeb, Ari and some more. This book picked up where the other one left off. They were on their way to DC to finally find their parents. It starts with fang getting hurt bad which lands them in line with the FBI who are obviously suspicious of 6 kids who have wings and can fly. They end up staying with the lead FBI lady, Ann in return for the medical care that Fang needs. So, for 2 months they try to blend in at school and act normal. Fang gets a girlfriend, Iggy meets mom and dad, and Max goes on a first date. However, that doesn't last long and soon they are on the run again trying to save their lives. You also get to have more perspective from Ari. I feel really sad for him because he basically just wants to be accepted by someone or anyone at this point. He even gets a glimpse of what it feels like to be someone a kid looks up to even if it was a case of mistaken identity.

The book is well written with plenty of emotions to trifle through and the kids are all experiencing things that can hit home for anyone. It's a great read and I can't wait to move move onto the 3rd one!
I feel like things really start to get interesting in this book. James Patterson doesn't disappoint! I love seeing how the relationship between Max and Fang develops. Maybe the characters should have been written in a couple years older because they definitely don't seem like 14 year olds.
Wish I would have discovered this series years ago!
I must say that the more I read this series, the more I love Max. She is sarcastic and witty, loving and caring, and tough and fiesty. Her constant ability to be sarcastic and still admit things to herself has me laughing through most of the book. She has to try to learn things on her own while basically raising 4 kids herself before she reaches age 15. That is a tough spot for anyone. With the recent trials that the group has befallen, throwing in some love triangles and things get even more interesting. Whereas there are plenty of funny times in this book, we also see Max reach her breaking point.
For the past five or so months this group has been on the run from everything like people, mutants, psychos, and now even robots. She breaks down and decides to try and remove her chip from her arm herself which really freaks everyone out and we finally see Fang make a move to show he cares for her. Fang and Max go looking for some place for them all to settle down together and just try to live without fighting for their lives or running all the time. She and Fang ends up kissing and oh how wonderful! Then, Max freaks out and they end up at Dr Martinez's again where she tries to take out Max's chip. While high on valium Max embarassingly confesses her love to Fang. While there, the rest of the group gets kidnapped and it looks like Angel has switched sides. When Max and Fang gets to the school to try to rescue the kids, they end up getting captured. Next occurs one of my most favorite scenes yet. I laughed til I cried at all the questioning and responses these kids gave. It was so well written that I couldn't believe it. Then, when they are about to be killed Angel turns out to be following a plan from Max and even Ari switches sides and helps them escape.
So, Max decides to let Ari come with them. His expiration date has already shown up, so Max wants to help him in the last month of his life. However, Fang ain't having it since Ari has tried to kill all of them more times than they care to count and he decides to leave. The next scene is sad because it becomes like parents making their children chose a side. It ends up the girls and Ari head to Europe while the boy head to LA. While in Europe they get captured in Germany and end up finding out many many things. Jeb comes in and tells Max about her real mom and dad and about Ari being her half brother. Max has to defeat a major person and Fang comes to the rescue in time through his blog while kids everywhere rise up against these big corporations.
Overall, a well writtne action packed story that has you wanting the final warning.
Freddy, what a wonderful character he is. I read only the first two when my children were here, and now I have finished the series. Every book is full of adventure, humor, and entertainment. I love animal stories, and all animals, but this takes the cake- a golden hamster who can read and write!
As advertised
Kids loved the first book. So purchased the rest of them. Every patron as pleased as punch. Thank you very much.
my son loved this book and the whole set. it got him reading all summer and I wish he had more books out to BUY!!!!
Yes I am an adult. No I do not normally read children's books. But I love hamsters. And Freddy is awesome! Definitely a collector's item hehe.
Our 9 year old granddaughter will love this series. She recently received 2 guinea pigs and this book seems to be a good fit for her!
Received in great shape
The pint-sized hero of this book by German author Dietlof Reiche is a somewhat conceited, certified smart-guy and a GREAT storyteller. The fact that he's also a golden hamster makes it even better. If you've read "I, Houdini" (by the British author who also wrote the Indian in the Cupboard), you'll love Reiche's five novels about Freddy the golden hamster and his friends. While it is a children's book, adults who like adventure will also love Freddy to the Rescue.
