Against his wife's warnings, Simon agrees to help Cardinal Genovi expose the conspiracy behind a modern-day cult.  But Simon should have listened to Grace.  She's more than smart and alluring ... she is usually right!

Twisted Linen is a fast-paced conspiracy thriller offering a chilling view of a possible future. A short novel drawn from modern-day current events, human genetic engineering, and end-times Scripture -- weaving a fictional tale around biblical prophecy concerning Israel and astronomical signs to occur in 2017. An appropriate read for those who like believable suspense thrillers with a touch of the occult and paranormal.

For decades Simon LaCroix faithfully served as Special Agent in Charge of Vatican Security, but now he and his wife Grace want a safer life apart from Rome. Their bug-out plans are interrupted when a top raking Cardinal summons Simon to the Papal Office and discloses a diabolical threat against the civilized world. A modern-day cult called the Golden Dawn plans to use the latest in genetic science to usher in a Final World Order, and Cardinal Genovi demands Simon's help this one last time. But there are deep fractures in the Church, unexpected betrayals, and dark secrets concealed in Grace's past.

From the majestic city of Rome to the picturesque city of San Sebastian, Spain, Simon and Grace race against time to expose the conspiracy behind the cult's insidious agenda. The situation turns deadly when a kidnapping ensnares them in a net of deception, deceit and divided loyalty.  And where it all leads. . .a dark nightmare into the underbelly of the occult with demonic consequences not revealed until the very end.

The plot is interesting and well-developed, and it immediately captured and held my interest. For plot alone, I would give this book four or five stars. However, the writing style through most of the book is clinical and cold, and it sometimes reads more like a list of actions and lines than prose. With the exception of Cardinal Genovi, the characters were dull and lifeless, lacking in personality and internal conflict. Since poor characterization is my number two pet peeve (superseded only by technical writing errors), this nearly killed the book for me, and it's a huge compliment to the plot that I read the whole thing.

That being said, there are a couple of really good scenes and a fantastic ending, and those were impressive enough that I don't feel like reading this was a total waste of time. Those scenes, along with the first few chapters, reveal a promising author and just might bring me back to check him out again in a few years.

The writing is awkward. Parts are quiet good, descriptive and compelling but the third person present case makes it off putting. The plot has plenty of twists and turns, possibly too many twists and turns.

Set in a dystopian near future where EMPs have turned the US into a depopulated waste land. The Ultimate battle of Good Verses Evil come down to the Shroud of Turin. Agents from the Vatican battle against members of the Golden Dawn in a quest to bring on the end of Days. Yes it is that fecking silly. Simon La Croix (the Cross)and his wife Grace are thieves who want to escape Europe. Simon is also the head of security for the Vatican. David Cohen is a rising star in Israel who is gunned down by a bullet to the head at his post election celebration.

Mixing theology, science and adventure can go many ways. This story just collapses in upon itself. You have to accept an incredible level of coincidences and conspiracies as well as ignore some scientific principles. Additionally what is driving the plot is the need for certain scientific samples which the baddies had 34 years earlier. So the lesson is save your work people.

But my biggest complaint about this book is a theological one. Where a character who 40 years earlier accepted Jesus and then proceeded to sin, cheat, protect criminals and lie will go straight to heaven because he had previously accepted Jesus. So I guess if you get to heaven you'll be hanging with people like Hitler, Ted Bundy and Pol Pot.

The ending is anticlimactic and weak
I can see the potential for an interesting story, but altogether as-is this book just wasn't for me.

Spelling/grammar/formatting This was not up to print paperback standards, but better than some of the independent books I've read. It is maybe a 2 out of 5 on this front. One consistent spelling error was rather humorous, in that some of the characters were driving a VW "Pollo" around Spain. There was no mention of whether anyone emerged covered in feathers.

Scenes One of the things that made this book hard to read was that a lot of the actions and scenes lacked weight. This is a problem I've seen many times in other books too. Elements appear out of nowhere as necessary, and some knowledge is just automatically known by one of the protagonists. There is not as much of a sense of place as I normally like.

For example, there is a part where one protagonist is running in pursuit of someone. Suddenly the protagonist is punched (but not by the bad guy he was after). The new assailant just kind of appeared with the punch. After a bit of wrestling, the protagonist is holding the bad guy over a cliff's edge. The cliff had not been mentioned previously.

There are also some other inconsistencies which detract from the story and make it harder to visualize. One character is described as shorter than average, but later is tilting other people's chins up to look at him.

Narration/story Another part that I felt brought down reading enjoyability had to do with the narration. The story is about the Shroud of Turin in part, and involves the Vatican. I expect religious topics to be discussed in such a book and that is not a problem in most cases (for instance I like William X Kienzle's Father Koesler books). However, there were several points where this book turned toward the preachy side, and not as a character but as the narrator. I've seen heavier, but at the same time it felt out of place.

Overall, I found myself not caring what happened to the characters or how things ended. As I mentioned, that was disappointing as I see the potential for an interesting story in here. I could see the potential for beautiful settings and horrific evil events in the story.
