Despite being fictional, Barry Surreal’s life has been a series of random non-linear events that may or may not be connected. This diary was found in a metal mop bucket with wheels on outside the School Janitor’s cupboard over eight years ago and now for the first time ever, I (Kevin Spangles) can reveal the secrets behind Barry’s St. Evander’s School Orchestra musician of the year award preparations, the day he managed to get the top off a highlighter pen in a partially-haunted cupboard and the adventure(s) he had in the tunnel under the all-weather pitch (apart from the last two).
All the facts in this book are not facts and any resemblance the characters bear to people alive or living is purely intercontinental. Barry attended St. Evander’s between the twentieth and thirtieth centuries and excelled in many subjects including but not limited to dinner time and playtime. His favourite food was Orange (the colour, not the fruit) and his favourite pastime was indolence.
"Hilarious" - The Daily Cardigan
"I laughed for minutes (not at this book)" - St. Evander's School Librarian
"More thrills than a broken roller coaster, more spills than a nervous man carrying a cup full of coffee" - The Thirtean Times

Modern Bizarro fiction is generally considered to be a literary style marked by absurdism, satire, surrealism, pop culture references and genre fiction elements, the purpose of which is to create subversive, weird, and entertaining works. Absolutely to a "T" that describes this story. And I emphasize the reference to "entertaining". At least in my recent experience lots of attempts at Bizarro turn out to be dense, dry, hysterical, rambling or incoherent. Not this baby. In addition to being an accomplished effort, this work is engaging and funny, albeit in a very deadpan and ironic fashion. Here's a bit of an excerpt: "[W]hilst Mrs. Wicklow was waffling on..., I was watching some 3rd year lads trying to do Javelin. The ambulance didn't take long to get there after the accident. They turned their hand to discus after that until one came crashing through the classroom window, knocking Mrs. Wicklow unconscious for the rest of the lesson. Someone should have reported it really." Could our narrator be more detached, unfazed and unimpressed? You can almost feel the tedium of middle school leaking through every phrase?
Actually, though, our narrator comes across generally as a genial sort, which means he doesn't wear out his welcome and he carries on this stream-of-consciousness diary with a light enough touch that the whole enterprise doesn't become wearing. At a very minimum this is very interesting writing and a very nice change of pace from even the best amusing and realistic school-days books. There is no plot as such and the story is episodic in the extreme, but of course that's part of the point. Instead of that, though, you get bits, set pieces, observations, mini-monologues and some very funny throwaway lines. As a short attention span reader this is right in my wheelhouse.
It seems that this might very well appeal to a younger reader with a well developed sense of the absurd and an adventurous streak. I hope so.
