The Dork of Cork is the only novel I have read more than once. The characters are developed in a way that made them all seem lifelike: I have know people like these, I know people like these. The descriptions of the night sky engaged my imagination and connected me to moments I have spent probing the stars. Raymo's language is, at times, hauntingly beautiful. The ode to Evensong as practiced in the Anglican Church tracks my experience and, I might add, John Irving's experience. I have read more than a few books in my years. This is my favorite work of fiction.Tags : The Dork of Cork [Chet Raymo] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Great purchase.
Enough said about the book in the previous reviews. I just want to add my 5 stars. I am so happy to have discovered Chet Raymo. This book has beautiful characters, lines that you want to re-read or memorize, astronomy (not astrology...as you'll see) all told from the perspective of a very unusual character whom you will love by the end of the book.
Awesome book. I gave my original copy to a friend and bought this one so I wouldn't be without it.
One of the BEST books ever- how I would love to meet Chet Raymo!
A story of extraordinary personal growth despite being faced with a permanent disability. Chet Raymo developed his characters well enough that you can almost see them.
Easy to read, fast and not wordy.
Like some of the other readers, I too fell on this book in a random library and it happend to be three states away from my home.
It was the title that made me pick up the book as well as learning that Frank was a midget. Before reading this book I had the fear the author was making a character for the world to laugh at but after the first page, I thought the author did an exceptional job portraying inflexible enthnocentrism- our tendency to see the world through the lense of our own culture and judging others as wrong simply because they are different. So for the few people who didn't like this book may have dismissed the human relationship between Frank and society; which is exacly why one should read this book. We have come a long way with erasing large amounts of racism and sexisim in our culture but we still continue to dehumanize people like Frank Boise. I recomend this book for those who personally identify with Frank Boise, who may know someone in their life like the character, who carry an interest it the culture of Ireland or those who like an easy to read, heart felt story.
Very good book.It surprised me as I first knew Chet Raymo as a scientist who used to have amazing articles in The Boston Globe.
His fiction is just as captivating and entertaining.
